HLADI Participated in National Inauguration of Technical Working Group and Consultants' Workshop for Food and Nutrition Policy Review

11 Apr, 2025

On April 12th, the Health and Lifestyle Awareness Development Initiative (HLADI) had the honor of participating in the inauguration of the Technical Working Group (TWG) and the Consultants' Workshop for the review of Nigeria’s National Policy on Food and Nutrition, held at Bon Hotel, Abuja.

This pivotal event brought together key actors from across sectors—government agencies, academia, development partners, civil society organizations, and private sector stakeholders—all united by a shared commitment to combatting food insecurity and malnutrition in Nigeria.

The National Policy on Food and Nutrition serves as Nigeria’s guiding framework to promote nutrition security and address the multifaceted challenges of malnutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, pregnant women, and lactating mothers. With Nigeria still facing high rates of stunting, wasting, undernutrition, and micronutrient deficiencies, the policy’s review comes at a critical juncture.

The workshop aimed to initiate a comprehensive and participatory review process that incorporates the latest research, best practices, and inclusive stakeholder input. During the event, participants engaged in robust discussions around key thematic areas, including:

  • Legislative frameworks for food and nutrition policy implementation

  • Resilience and climate-smart food systems

  • Roles of the private sector and strategic partnerships

  • Food safety and innovation in nutrition programming

  • Equity, gender inclusion, and community participation

The Technical Working Group (TWG) was officially inaugurated to offer technical guidance throughout the review process. Comprised of experienced professionals and subject matter experts, the TWG will ensure that the revised policy is grounded in data-driven evidence and aligns with Nigeria’s broader development priorities and global nutrition targets.

The Consultants’ Workshop also created a platform for diverse voices to contribute their insights—leveraging lived experiences, on-the-ground implementation feedback, and sector-specific knowledge. This collaborative approach is expected to produce a revised policy that is not only comprehensive and forward-looking but also realistic and implementable.

HLADI’s Role and Commitment

As an organization with a longstanding track record in nutrition program delivery, policy advocacy, and community health initiatives, HLADI’s participation in this process reaffirms our commitment to shaping a healthier future for all Nigerians. We believe that a robust and inclusive national nutrition policy is fundamental to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

We are dedicated to supporting this review process through technical contributions, grassroots engagement, and advocacy efforts. By aligning policy with local realities and global standards, HLADI aims to help drive systemic change that ensures nutritious, safe, and affordable food for all.

Why This Matters Now

The timing of this policy review is critical. Nigeria is currently facing a convergence of challenges—from rising food inflation and climate-related shocks to growing humanitarian needs. A renewed and actionable National Policy on Food and Nutrition can play a transformative role in:

  • Tackling the root causes of malnutrition

  • Supporting sustainable agricultural practices

  • Strengthening multi-sectoral collaboration

  • Enhancing nutrition-sensitive social protection programs

A well-reviewed and context-responsive policy will serve as a cornerstone for promoting food sovereignty, community health, and national development.
