The Health and Lifestyle Awareness Development Initiative (HLADI) recently participated in a comprehensive two-day training on the Multiple Micronutrient Supplement (MMS) Costing Tool, held at Rock View Hotel. The capacity-building program was organized by Results for Development (R4D) in collaboration with the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), UNICEF, State Nutrition Officers, and other key nutrition and health stakeholders.
This pivotal training aimed to strengthen national and subnational capacity for effective planning, budgeting, and implementation of micronutrient supplementation programs across Nigeria.
Training Objectives and Focus
The primary objective of the training was to build the skills of participants to:
- Effectively plan and budget for micronutrient supplementation
- Use the MMS Costing Tool to design cost-efficient programs
- Optimize the delivery of micronutrient supplements to vulnerable populations
- Ensure that micronutrient programs are both impactful and financially sustainable
The MMS Costing Tool was positioned as a critical resource to support evidence-based program planning and resource allocation.
Day 1: Deep Dive into the Costing Tool
The first day focused on understanding and navigating the MMS Costing Tool. Technical experts facilitated sessions that covered:
- A detailed overview of the tool and its purpose
- Step-by-step guidance on how to use the tool effectively
- Hands-on practical exercises simulating real-life costing scenarios
Participants gained not only theoretical understanding but also the practical competence needed to apply the tool within their respective programs.
Day 2: Collaboration, Case Studies & Action Planning
The second day centered on peer learning, practical application, and program integration. Activities included:
- Group discussions and experience sharing
- Review of best practices from different states and organizations
- Development of tailored action plans for integrating the tool into ongoing programs
- Networking sessions to strengthen collaboration across agencies
The interactive format encouraged shared learning and fostered stronger partnerships aimed at improving nutrition outcomes nationwide.
HLADI’s Commitment to Improved Program Delivery
HLADI’s participation in this training significantly strengthened the organization’s technical capacity in micronutrient supplementation programming.
With the knowledge acquired, HLADI is better positioned to:
- Plan and budget more efficiently
- Develop cost-effective micronutrient programs
- Improve targeting and service delivery to vulnerable populations
- Contribute more effectively to national nutrition interventions
The training further reinforces HLADI’s commitment to advancing evidence-based, high-impact nutrition solutions across the country.
A Note of Appreciation
HLADI extends sincere appreciation to R4D, NPHCDA, FMOH, UNICEF, and other partners for organizing this valuable training. The opportunity to learn, collaborate, and exchange ideas with diverse stakeholders has been both enriching and inspiring.
Conclusion
The Multiple Micronutrient Supplement Costing Tool Training was a resounding success. It equipped HLADI and other participants with the essential tools required to design and deliver cost-effective, impactful micronutrient supplementation programs.
Together with national and development partners, HLADI remains committed to advancing nutrition, tackling micronutrient deficiencies, and improving health outcomes for communities across Nigeria.
