Advancing Nutritional Health in Nigeria: HLADI Engages in Multiple Micronutrients Supplementation Training

13 May, 2024

As part of our unwavering commitment to promoting public health and nutrition, the Health and Lifestyle Awareness Development Initiative (HLADI) recently took part in the Multiple Micronutrients Supplementation Landscape Analysis (MMS-LAN) training, hosted by the Nutrition Department of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare. This essential training took place from August 12 to 16, 2024, at the Hawthorn Suites in Area 11, Abuja.

Addressing Micronutrient Deficiencies in Nigeria

The MMS-LAN training served as an interactive platform to address the pressing issue of micronutrient deficiencies, a significant public health concern in Nigeria. Participants gained in-depth knowledge and practical skills related to micronutrient supplementation, with a particular focus on combating Iron Deficiency Anemia, the most prevalent micronutrient deficiency in the country. This condition predominantly affects vulnerable populations, including children, adolescent girls, and women of reproductive age (15-49 years).

During the training, HLADI was represented by a dedicated team of research assistants who actively engaged in discussions and learning sessions. This experience not only enriched our understanding of micronutrients but also reinforced the critical role they play in mitigating nutritional deficiencies.

Our Role as Research Assistants

As research assistants, our responsibilities included:

Conducting Focus Group Discussions (FGDs): We engaged with pregnant women, their partners, and healthcare workers across rural and urban areas in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These discussions were vital for understanding community needs and perceptions regarding micronutrient supplementation.

Data Collection: We meticulously gathered quantitative and qualitative data to support the analysis of micronutrient needs and program effectiveness.

Data Analysis: Our team analyzed and interpreted the data collected during the training, providing insights that will help shape future initiatives.

Documentation: HLADI documented all activities conducted during the training and subsequent surveys, ensuring a comprehensive record of our findings and experiences.

Site Visits: Practical Experience in Healthcare

In addition to the training, HLADI's team participated in site visits to three primary health centers in Abuja: Karo Primary Health Center, Kuchigoro Primary Health Center, and Lugbe Primary Health Center. These visits provided invaluable hands-on experience, allowing us to:

Assess the benefits and risks associated with micronutrient supplements.

Learn effective counseling techniques for advising patients on the appropriate use of these supplements.

Develop actionable plans to integrate micronutrient supplementation into healthcare practices.

Commitment to Healthier Futures

The training aligns seamlessly with HLADI's vision of creating a healthier Nigeria through education, empowerment, and collaboration. By participating in the MMS-LAN training, our research assistants are now better equipped to contribute meaningfully to our mission and positively impact the health and well-being of Nigerians.

We look forward to leveraging the insights gained from this training and the site visits to further our efforts in addressing nutritional deficiencies and enhancing public health outcomes across Nigeria.
